    Group Discussion - Engineering Course

You may wish to print these directions so that you can refer to them when you do your weekly discussions.

Each week your group will have its own discussion forum in the Discussion Board area of this course site. When you go to this area, you will find a Discussion Assignments list.

For one member in your group, you will create a problem. From a different member in your group, you will receive a problem. Each problem must be a new problem (not one from your homework or book), and it must be related to the week's assignment.

Each week you are to do the following tasks.
  • At the start of the week, check your Discussion Assignments list and find these things:

    1) the group member for whom you will create the problem and the Subject title to use when you are ready to post your problem
    2) the group member from whom you will receive a problem and the Subject title under which the problem will be posted

  • Begin by creating your own problem for the week so that you can post it right away. Make sure you know the solution, but do not give it until later.

By not later than Monday of the week, go to the Discussion Board and find your groups discussion forum.

Select Start New Thread and in the Subject of your message, use the title given with your Discussion Assignments.

Post only your problem and check back later for the reply.

  • Look for the problem posted for you. If you do not find the problem, you may contact the group member and request it.

If you think you know how to solve it, begin solving it. When ready, post your solution as a reply to the discussion thread.

If you think you do not know how to solve it, review the lectures and textbook for ideas. If you still don't know what to do, post a comment or question as a reply to the discussion thread.

Continue the discussion as needed until you are able to solve the problem or the solution is posted for you.

  • Check back to look for a reply to the problem you posted.

If the reply is a solution, you must reply that the solution is correct or is not correct.

If the reply is not correct, you might try to figure out and explain the mistakes that your group member made.

If the reply is a request for help or questions, you must give guidance or answer the questions.

In your final reply, make sure that you give the correct solution AND explain how you arrived at the solution.

  • At the end of your discussion, write a 1-2 sentence summary describing the concepts that you used this week in creating and solving problems.

  • Review all the other problems and solutions posted for your group and for all the other groups. Any of them may be selected for use in a quiz or exam at a later date.

Simple Group Discussion - Engineering Course

Each week your group will create and solve problems in your Discussion Boards of your Group Pages area. When you go to this area, you will find your name listed in one of the groups. Each week, you will create and solve problems in your group

For every message you post, make sure you create the Subject, post your problem or solution as instructed, and include your first and last name. This makes it easier the teaching assistants and me to review and respond to your discussion messages.

  • Begin by creating a new problem. Use the concepts you are studying during the week. Post your problem before Sunday night of the current week. Don’t post the solution, until later in the week.
  • Next, look for the problems posted by your group members. Begin working on the solutions. Post any questions. You can ask for help. You can make mistakes. Someone in your group will help.
  • Continue the discussion as needed until you are able to solve all problems posted by your group.
  • The teaching assistants and I will check in with you each week.
  • I will review the discussion postings and may share the most interesting problems and solutions with the rest of the class. Problems like these also may be selected for your tests.
