Handout to accompany: Face-to-Face with an Online Expert Panel

Including the expert panelists in the online course environment involved brainstorming, negotiating, decision making, planning, and follow up in several areas.

Faculty support

n        negotiate prospective role of panelists

n        negotiate prospective role of students

Logistical support

n        align discussion with course schedule

n        identify and recruit prospective panelists and roles in online discussion for face-to-face class

n        collect biographical information to use in introductions

n        introduce panelists and instructor to each other

n        organize and post introductions at discussion area

n        prepare and post directions at discussion area

Student support

n        structure role of student input in face-to-face class meetings

n        structure form of interactions with panelists

n        organize student input into conceptual categories for response by panelists

n        explain to students role of student input and discussion postings

Expert support

n        describe mission for panel

n        obtain passwords for electronic campus access

n        add panelists to user list at course site

n        assist experts in try out of operations of course site

Discussion support

n        create discussion boards for introductions and for discussions

n        prepare and post introductions at first discussion board

n        prepare and post instructions for discussion at second discussion board

n        monitor frequency, content, and attitude expressed in discussions

n        brainstorm, negotiate, and plan responses for sensitive issues

n        restrict feedback from instructor

n        treat students equally

Learning support

n        review and identify concepts of discussions

n        prepare summary and post in discussion area

n        discuss experiences in face-to-face class meetings
